Nokia 6 - Nokia makes a comeback, this time with Andriod

Nokia 6 body

HMD Global launced the new Nokia smart phone called Nokia 6 in China, marking Nokia's comeback into the smartphone space.

Its not a flagship:

Contrary to the rumors, HMD launched a midranger having interesting mix of specifications, instead of a flagship. The focus seems to be on design and craftsmanship rather than raw power.

Premium Built and Design:

Nokia 6 makes use of the 6000 series aluminium, that is double anodized and polished five times claims HMD. A thing to note is that, this midranger uses the same kind of material used in iPhone 6. HMD also says that the phone body takes 55 minutes to machine from a single block of 6000 series aluminium, which is a very good thing for a midrange smartphone.

Safe specs:

Nokia 6 has a 5.5-inch Full HD screen having subtle curve to the front, thanks to the use of 2.5D Gorilla Glass. Nokia 6 runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor with octa cores ( 1.4 GHz Cortex-A53 ) and uses Adreno 505 as GPU, which makes it a midrange smartphone. The battery capacity is 3000mAh with generous ram and storage capacities, i.e. 4 GB RAM and 64GB of on-board storage.

Software:

Nokia 6 will run on Android Nougat, but HMD has not given any information on software customizations. Perhaps, HMD wants to keep the software features under the wraps, and wants the media to speculate about it. If Nokia N1 was any indication, then Nokia 6 could run on a custom launcher called Nokia Z launcher.

Camera and Sound:

There is a 16MP camera on the rear with F/2.0 aperture and PDAF for fast auto-focusing and a 8MP front camera. As far as sound is concerned, Nokia 6 features a dual stereo speaker audio setup with Dolby Atmos features, which means it could be amongst the better sounding smartphone in its price category.

Price and Availability:

The Nokia 6 is priced at 1699 yuan (USD $245  / INR 17,000 approximately). Nokia 6 is currently exclusive to China and will be available via JD.com , with no words on plan for the rest of the world.

Bottom-line:

Considering the specs and the features, Nokia 6 seems like a good competition to the mid range smartphones from the likes of Samsung, Sony etc but doesn't offer anything that could counter the likes of Chinese giants like Xiaomi, Leeco or Huawei.

Samsung has 'innovated' by going back in time and bringing back features like expandable storage along with IP68 dust and water resistance capability ala Samsung Galaxy S5.Bringing back the expandable storage options, might have brought smiles on the faces of the reviewers and fans alike who were quite disappointed by the lack of sd card support in their predecessors. The great thing is that Samsung has brought these utility features without compromising on th...

Google sides US and bans Huawei

Google has just released a statement that they will be banning Huawei's license to use Android immediately as it must compile to US Laws. This is a hugh blow to the Chinese smartphone maker which has already become the 3rd largest smartphone maker in the world, on the back of some solid smartphones.  Speaking to  Reuters , a Google spokesperson confirmed that “Google Play and the security protections from Google Play Protect will continue to function on existing Huawei devices.” This means while the current smartphones should receive updates, the future is surely uncertain for Huawei. The decision might leave Huawei to choose Open source version of Android, called AOSP for its devices which is devoid of any google sevices and which usually recieves the security updates much later than Android. Huawei might also contemplate launching its own OS, incase matters get worse.  It is very sad to see politics getting involved in tech industry. Other famed compa...
