There are always a few surprises present at Xiaomi's event, but this time around it was rather sweet one. After announcing its flagship Mi Note 2, Xiaomi unveiled its concept phone- Mi Mix, which features an 6.4 inch "edgeless" display, with an unheard screen to body ratio of 91.3 percent. This might also be the first concept phone to be available in the market ,albeit in limited numbers and only in China. This kind of design means Xiaomi had to replace the usual ear-piece with a cantilevered piezoelectric actuator to produce audible sound for voice calls. There is also an ultrasonic proximity sensor instead of an regular one.
The "rest of the phone" also goes toe to toe with the likes of Apple and Samsung. It features a gorgeous ceramic build designed by famed French designer Philippe Starck. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor clocked at 2.35GHz, with upto 6GB of RAM, 128GB or 256GB of storage, a 4,400mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support, a fingerprint scanner, a 16-megapixel primary camera and a custom-made 5-megapixel selfie camera which features half the sensor size as normal cameras. The Mi Mix will be released on November 4th starting under RMB3499 or US $515 for 4GB+128GB variant and going upto RMB3999 or US $590 for 6GB+256GB variant.
The smartphone market is becoming more and more boring as the time passes, and hence it is refreshing to see a company like Xiaomi trying something new, as it opens the door for similar high end devices from other OEMs
